What expenses does a health insurance policy typically cover? Tips
A typical health insurance plan would cover hospitalisation expenses (minimum 24 hour hospitalisation required) and also pre and post hospitalisation expenses to the extent of the sum assured. Conditions arising from diseases existing before the purchase of the policy are not covered in the policy. These “pre-existing” diseases are covered usually after 4-5 years of the policy being in force, in case of a continuous policy.
Multiple claims can be filed during the year but the claim settlement will be up to a maximum of the sum assured.
Insurance companies have now come up with innovative health products which cover day care treatment (where 24 hours hospitalisation is not required), ambulance charges up to a certain limit, cost of medicines, diagnostic expenses and free medical checkups subject to a particular limit among other things.
